Okay I have been hearing that Computer Science and English are incompatible. I have to admit at the first thought of these two subjects you would think the two have nothing in common. Especially if one does not have personal experience with both. There are some similarities that you probably have not looked at.
Now I'm pretty sure we all know the subject English is based on the language English. If you major in it at college you will probably learn a little history about different countries through poems and stories that are ancient. Then you will take some courses that study different types of English writings like technical, rhetoric, advertising, and grant writing. Often writers write blogs, manuscript, novels, textbook, and basically anything you can read.
When you study computer science you are going to learn how to program using different computer languages. Some popular computer language that people study are Java, C++, JavaScript, and Python. Programmers utilize these languages to tell the computer what to do, create apps/programs, and express algorithms. If you study this at college you may have learn about different parts of the computer and study Computer Forensics (which is really cool). Programmers basically make texting possible, cellphone apps, and anything similar to what Bill Gates does.
Obviously you probably still do not see the similarities. Hopefully you haven't passed out from boredom because I am about enlighten you now. First they both involve writing. Yes, you can write both on paper or type the English language or a computer language. Next, they both focus on communication. Computer Science focuses on communicating to computer while English focuses on communicating to people. Thirdly, Computer science and English increases one's problem solving abilities by making one figure out how to be more accurate and precise. The most important thing in writing is figuring out how to accurately tell your audience a message. This requires problem solving skills because the writer must come up with a way to their audience to understand. I'm sure most of you know problem solving is big in programming (if you don't know, you do now). Like math equations the language has to be completely right in order for the computer to understand it. Not one single thing can be messed up. Lastly, is the biggest thing in writing and that is creativity. Yes, studying English and Computer Science teaches creativity. One can do anything they can think with the skills of writing or programming. Writers can create things that help, educate, persuade, or entertain you. Programmer, can create thing that make life easier, educate, or assist people.
Do you still think English and Computer Science have nothing in common?
